Les abris du marin ont été fondés au tout début du 20 ème sciècle pour fournir une autre occupation que les cafés aux marins. On pouvait y jouer aux cartes ou à d'autres jeux et il s'agissait plus largement d'un lieu de rassemblement et de discussion.
Ces abris du marin, que l'on retrouve dans la plupart des ports bretons, ont atteint leur objectif et sont devenus des symboles sociaux portuaires. Ils abritent actuellement des expositions, des bibliothèques et autres médiathèques ...
